Third Mill: Theology for the world

August 15, 2010

I had the pleasure and privilege to learn from Dr. Richard Pratt at RTS. His specialty is theology and Old Testament. Dr. Pratt was the lead editor for the Spirit of the Reformation Study Bible  (what I use) – by far the best study Bible available today. He was part of the translation team for The Living Translation – my favorite version for the right blend of readability, thought accuracy, and subtle nuance from the original languages. Of everyone alive today, I can think of no one I respect more than Dr. Pratt.

Dr. Pratt has a calling to serve the body of Christ by raising the level of excellence in seminary education globally.

Most pastors and church leaders in the areas of the world where the church is growing the fastest have little or no education in Bible or theology. I believe it’s the biggest problem facing the church today.

The US has several great seminaries, but we do a very poor job of exporting that excellence to the rest of the world. Seminary is expensive. Even with a full scholarship, it’s expensive to bring a pastor from a developing nation to the US for four years. And there are language issues as well. For those few who do come to the US, most do not return to their native land.

Dr. Pratt’s organization, Third Millennium Ministries is developing a complete M Div degree curriculum in five languages (English, Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), Russian and Spanish), and making the curriculum available for free to missionaries, Bible schools, colleges, and seminaries around the world. The courses are developed by the best of the seminar professors. Several other partner ministries are taking the curriculum and translating it into more languages.

Think of it, if you run a small seminary in a developing nation, you can plug into a great curriculum, know you’re offering your students the best available, and be much further along your path to accreditation. Instead of spending half of your time on curriculum development and quality control, you can focus on the students and growing your seminary. It’s a great solution and one of the best ways the US can serve the body of Christ.

I beseech you to learn more about Third Millennium Ministries:

  • Support the ministry as part of your giving to the church at large.
  • Tell your church about it.
  • Pray for Third Millennium Ministries and Dr. Pratt.
  • Purchase a course on DVD, watch it, play it for your Sunday School class.

It’s one of the most unique and needed ministries in the world today.

I just ordered four courses on DVD from Third Mill. I’ll post reviews of each after I watch them.
